Holiday Ornaments
Be sure and visit the Museum Store during the holiday shopping season for gifts with the flavor of the Eastern Shore. Holiday ornaments feature “history in the box.” Each decoration comes with a specially written story card in a windowed gift box. Three of our most popular ornaments are featured below. Ornaments are available for purchase NOW. Last year the most popular ones sold out, so shop early.
New for 2007: The Maryland Terapin
"The most aristocratic reptile" proclaimed a Talbot County newspaper in 1928. Chesapeake colonists ate terrapin prepare Native-American fashion -- roated whole in live coals. Turtles were so abundant that landowners often provided their meat to slaves and servants. In the 19th century, terrapin became appreciated as a gourmet food. As the University of Maryland mascot, we expect these terapins to sell out. Be sure to grab one for yourself.

The Blue Crab
Callinectes sapidus
The blue crab stands as one of the best-known symbols of the Chesapeake Bay. In Latin, the name of this bottom-dwelling predator translates as “Beautiful swimmer that is savory.” Blue crabs use their broad, flat hind appendages to paddle through the water, making them remarkable swimmers. Since the mid-1800s, these savory crustaceans have been caught commercially in the Chesapeake. We have sold out the last two years. Shop early in November to be sure of catching yours.

The Talbot Christmas Tomato
The steady staccato “clink, clink, clink” of empty cans winding along a conveyor line once provided the background music for canning plants throughout Talbot County. The county's first cannery opened in 1875. By the turn of the 20th century, these plants were a common sight on the rural landscape processing oysters, fish and vegetables. In terms of tomatoes, the Harrison and Jarboe canneries alone processed 9,000 baskets of fruit every day translating into 18 million cans per year. In the tradition of Talbot County canneries, your blown-glass Christmas Tomato has been “hand packed” for the holidays by a group of dedicated volunteers.
