Volunteer
Opportunities
The
Historical Society has a small staff that work to help the Society
fulfill its mission. It is a big job to do and we need your
help! If you are interested in helping to preserve the
heritage of Talbot County or if you just like meeting new people and
working towards a common goal, please consider volunteering with the
Historical Society of Talbot County.
Special Announcement! Docents Needed!
Enthrall visitors with tales of Talbot County's history - become a Historical Society docent! We are looking for active and enthusiastic
volunteers to lead historic house tours and walking tours of Historic Easton. Help the Historical Society achieve its mission of discovering and preserving the cultural
heritage of our community. Joining the docent corps gives you the chance to meet new people and provides a rich opportunity to learn about Talbot County history and to
make a real contribution to its preservation and interpretation. No previous teaching experience required. Great flexibility and variety are hallmarks of volunteering at the
Historical Society. A specialized training program is available. Please call (410) 822-0773 or email the Museum Staff if you are interested.
Archives and Object Collections
If you are a detail-oriented person, then this is the position for you!
Help us sort, catalog, and store some of Talbot County's most important
and unique documents, manuscripts, maps, and objects.
For more information, contact the Curatorial Department.
Buildings
& Grounds
Are you a handy person who has already fixed everything around your
house twice? If you are looking for something to do, we could use your
expertise. The Society owns and manages seven buildings, a garden, and
numerous other areas in need of maintenance and upkeep. The Talbot
County Garden Club takes care of the garden, but we sometimes need help
with the buildings, including upkeep and small repair and maintenance
projects.
For more information, contact the Administrative Assistant.
Docent
Program
Share the history of Talbot County with others - become a Docent!
Docents are the volunteers who give guided tours of the Society's three
historic houses, the Museum, and the historic downtown district of
Easton. This is an extremely important job, as you are the "human
faces" of the Historical Society for our visitors.
No extensive historical knowledge or previous guide experience is necessary. In-depth
training is provided annually for new volunteers.
For more information, please contact the Museum Staff.
Education
and Programs
From lectures to youth programs, school activities to adult workshops,
The Education Department is in need of dedicated people to organize and
staff educational programs and events.
No teaching experience is
necessary. We need folks who will roll up their sleeves and pitch in on
various tasks, on a project-by-project basis.
For more information, please contact the Museum Staff.
Photograph
Collection Project
The Society has a photograph collection of 100,000 original negatives
and prints, recognized across the state as the most
important collection
of historical photographs of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. For over 15
years, the collection has been a victim of neglect due to a lack of
staff, money, and time. Now, though, the Society is dedicated to
preserving, re-housing, and cataloguing this important collection!
Conservation and cataloguing training will be provided - you do not need
to have any experience with photography, only the interest and the
desire to help make this collection safe and accessible!
For more information, contact the Curatorial
Department.
Special
Events
The Historical Society hold many activities and special events each
year, from the Antiques Fair to the Winter Ball. We need help from
people who are available on an "as needed" basis to sell
tickets, hang posters, distribute flyers, work on mailings and all sorts
of other things. Sound interesting to you?
For more information, contact
the Administrative Assistant.
Tharpe
Antiques and Decorative Arts
Do you know a lot about antiques? Do you like to meet people? Then
consider working at our antique consignment shop. We need people who
love antiques and are willing to work at a sales counter. Previous sales
experience would be helpful but not required. The shop is open Tuesday
through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
For more information, contact Tharpe
